So how big is big? It’s huge. Let’s review the numbers:

5.2 BILLION SUBSCRIBERS WORLDWIDE

So first the biggest number – 5.2. That is in billions with a B.

  • There are 1.2 billion personal computers worldwide including desktops, laptops and tablet PCs like the iPad.
  • There are 1.1 billion landline phones
  • There are 1.0 billion vehicles registered and in use.
  • There are 1.6 billion television sets, 1.7 billion credit card users, 2.0 billion internet users, 2.2 billion people with a banking account, and 3.9 billion radio receivers in use worldwide.

Mobile utterly dwarfs them all – with 5.2 billion currently active. 5.2 billion. yes, 4.5 times more mobile phone subscriptions than personal computers or landline phones. 2.5x more mobile accounts than all internet users. 3 times more mobile subscribers than the total number of television sets. Mobile is huge.

In Australia and the USA the mobile phone penetration rate is 100% per capita. That may seem impressive, it is not. The UK and Europe are at 130%, many leading countries are already past the 150% level and the United Arab Emirates (ie Abu Dhabi, Dubai) became the first country to pass 200% mobile phone subscriber count. And even the poorest regions are rushing in. The continent of Africa has already passed the 50% penetration level in mobile phone subscriptions per capita.

Nokia told us way back in 2010 that the average person on the planet looks at the phone now 150 times per day. That ‘s every six and a half minutes of every hour we are awake! It’s our clock, alarm, calendar and our map.

  •  The activity that gets the most use of the mobile ‘phone’ is voice calls – but that is nowhere near 100% Yes, only 88% of us will originate voice calls.
  • The primary use of a mobile phone for most users is.. SMS text messaging! 82% of all mobile phone users already send SMS text messages.
  • Most users now prefer SMS as the most used function on the phone.

While all mobile phone accounts include free voicemail, the use of voicemail is down to 67%. Mobile phone subscribers are doing what for example the Finnish Prime Minister was saying earlier in the past decade – their voicemail says, don’t leave me voice mail, send me an SMS text message instead.

So the huge number here is SMS. SMS text messaging has more than twice the number of users as all users of the internet. Nearly four times more people send SMS text messages than have a PC of any kind. SMS is 3 times bigger than email.

Do you think Facebook is ‘important’ and ‘popular’ – well, SMS is… seven … yes seven (!) times bigger than Facebook. You like Twitter? SMS is 21 times bigger than Twitter!

  •  SMS is the only technology that reaches the pockets of 61% of the planet. SMS user base is almost four times as big as the total of all personal computers in us.
  • If your website isn’t mobile, soon you won’t be seen.
  • If you’re not using Google+ Local Places for Business, you’re not going to be ranking highly regardless of how good your site.
  • If you’re not getting ready to use SMS marketing, you’re going to be left behind.

  • 70% of all mobile searches are acted upon within an hour, versus 30% of traditional searches

  •  97 percent of mobile subscribers read an SMS message within 15 minutes of receiving it; 84 percent respond within an hour (source Nielsen Mobile)
  •  84% of mobile phone users keep their device within 10 feet of them at all times (source Mobile Marketing Review)
  • Mobile phone campaigns typically have response rates of 12-15% (as opposed to direct mail which averages 2 – 3 percent); some companies are seeing response rates as high as 60 percent (source Mobile Marketing Review)
  •   A last-minute campaign I ran with a client saw a 30% response rate – and he’s now converted to mobile (SMS) marketing
  • While 65 percent of email is spam, this is less than 10 percent with SMS.
  •  100m people use their mobile phones to manage their Facebook account.

  • This sounds silly, but link more to other people’s sites than your own
  •  If you can, post between 7-9am (42% of women who are the buying market age 18-35 check fb before going to the bathroom in the morning!)  and 6pm-9pm. Use Hootsuite’s FREE service for thiswww.hootsuite.com

No-one likes a grandstander so don’t just talk about yourself. When posting on other people’s sites do it as your business and don’t ever say, “… go to my site…”

Social Media Tips:

Facebook

–     Say “like this post” and they’ll like it 3x higher than normal

–     Say “comment on a post” for a 3.3x higher comment rate

–     Say “share a post” – the share rate is 7.7x higher

Twitter

Just go to a competitor’s Twitter account – or someone else with your perfect customers – and follow them. 40% follow back out of courtesy.

–     Can it be automated? No it’s a manual task. So outsource this to someone to do it for you.

–     Twitter limits the number you can follow per day according to how many followers you have – so generate followers before you start following.

Pinterest – drives more referral traffic than youtube, linkedin and google+ combined

  •   Users spend twice as much as Facebook users, with double the income
  • Putting a price in the pin sells three times the quantity – Pinterest will position the price automatically for you
  • A hairdresser in the States took pictures showing how to do hair properly and put them on her business pinterest page – she got 10m visits to her website from Pinterest. How would that feel?
